Attack on military convoy kills soldier, injures 12

* Militants attack military camp in Mir Ali

Staff Report

TANK/MIRANSHAH: A soldier was killed and 12 others injured in an explosion on Friday that targeted a military convoy in Tank district in North Waziristan, military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told Daily Times by phone.

Civilians continue to suffer casualties in clashes between tribal militants and security forces in North Waziristan.

A police official in Tank city said the military convoy was on its way to Tank from Manzai when the explosion occured near the Goldenabad area.

“The condition of three injured soldiers is critical as all wounded soldiers were airlifted to Bannu where they are under treatment at a military hospital,” the official said.

The army cordoned off the area and launched search operations for the suspected militants who are constantly targeting military convoys on the Tank-Wana highways. However, no arrests were made during the search operation.

Attack on military camp: Separately, in North Waziristan, a military camp in Mir Ali was attacked with heavy weapons by pro-Taliban militants and when the army retaliated an artillery shell killed one and injured three others in Musaki village, residents and officials said. Also, three mortar shells from across the Afghan border narrowly missed a Pakistani security checkpost, security officials told Daily Times.

“The shells landed 300 yards from the Bangidar checkpost, on the (Afghan) border. However, no-one was injured in the attack,” the officials added.
